Estonia Declared Rinderpest/Hoof and Mouth Disease Free

Estonia has been added to the Department of Agriculture list of regions considered free of rinderpest and hoof-and-mouth disease. Because of its proximity to nations lacking that status additional requirements for meat importation from Estonia are also changed. Both are effective June 14th. Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies Advisory Committee To Meet

Procedures designed to prevent transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease via human cells, tissues, and their by-products will be the main topic of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee meeting. Research updates on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) injected in sheep and other studies performed on mice will be discussed. ITC Mexican Tomato Investigation Gets New Timetable

The U.S. International Trade Commission revised its schedule for completing a probe of antidumping duty investigation on fresh tomatoes from Mexico. The new schedule requires a Sept. 24th deadline for testifying and submitting pre-hearing briefs, an October 15th deadline for post-hearing briefs. The final party comments will be due November 5th. Comments & Recommendations Sought on Codex Food Safety Sanitary Standards

The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service wants public comments and recommendations for new sanitary standards for the international Codex Alimentarius Commission (CODEX). Standards under consideration deal with foods derived from biotechnology, olive and other fats and oils, meat and poultry, chocolate, additives and contaminants, fish, fruits and vegetables as well as juices, food labeling, milk and milk products, etc. For more information contact F. Pre-Codex Public Meeting Scheduled

A public meeting is scheduled for July 30th to discuss information and solicit public comment on the U.S. positions being prepared for the 24th Session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses. This meeting will be held at the FDA’s Harvey Wiley Building in College Park, Maryland. The Codex meeting is set for November 4-8 in Berlin, Germany. Final Rule Set for Fludioxonil on Caneberries

EPA issued a time-limited tolerance for residues of the fungicide fludioxonil for caneberries (raspberries, etc.) that will expire December 31, 2003. Decoquinate and Chlortetracycline Approved by FDA for Cattle

Decoquinate and chlortetracycline Type A medicated articles are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to makea two-way combination Type B and Type C medicated feeds for calves, beef, and nonlactating dairy cattle. The medicated feed is used to prevent coccidiosis as well as treatment of bacterial enteritis and bacterial pneumonia. The approval is effective May 23, 2002.
